Coordinator

Dr Renato José Machado
Biologist graduated from the Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL), master in entomology from the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) and PhD in entomology from Texas A&M University (TAMU). Postdoctoral degree from the Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso (UFMT), where I also worked as a temporary professor. Since 2019 I have been an adjunct professor and researcher in the Department of Zoology of the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) and associated with the postgraduate program in Entomology of the department. I work especially in the areas of systematics and insect biology with a focus on the orders Neuroptera and Mecoptera. I am curator of the so-called oligodiverse orders in the Padre Jesus Santiago Moure Entomological Collection (DZUP), member of the board of the Brazilian Society of Entomology (SBE) and the International Association of Neuropterology (IAN), as well as coordinator of the orders Neuroptera and Mecoptera in the Taxonomic Catalog of the Fauna of Brazil. Associate editor of the journals Revista Brasileira de Entomologia and CheckList.

Msc Adriana Andrade Mota
Biologist graduated from the Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso (2021), master in Entomology from the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (2023). Currently a PhD student in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Entomology at the Universidade Federal do Paraná. My project is in partnership with the Senckenberg Research Institute and the Natural History Museum. My study group is Chrysomelidae (Insecta, Coleoptera), with an emphasis on the subfamily Cassidinae with species that have subsociality. My research integrates alpha taxonomy, systematics, techniques with state-of-the-art non-invasive methods and aims to explore the evolution of morphological characters, and incorporate this information with molecular datasets to understand the evolution of maternal care within the subfamily Cassidinae

Msc Paula Jéssica Costa Pinto
Biologist, graduated from the Universidade Federal do Ceará, with a master's degree in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on Entomology from the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia and currently a PhD student in the Postgraduate Program in Biological Sciences (Entomology) at the Universidade Federal do Paraná. In the laboratory, my research focuses on the taxonomy and phylogeny of Embioptera, with a focus on the phylogeny of Teratembiidae (Insecta: Embioptera) and the taxonomic review of Brazilian species, contributing to the identification and description of new species. My academic experience also includes studies on the resistance of agricultural pests to insecticides, biological control and monitoring of anurans in conserved environments.

Maíra Encenha de Souza
Graduated in Biological Sciences from the Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP) - FCLs Assis. Currently a master's student in the postgraduate program in Entomology at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), with my project consisting of studying the predatory behavior of the species Argentoleon irrigatus (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae), specifically describing the mechanism related to the functioning of the mandibles and other factors associated with predation. The project is carried out under the co-supervision of Prof. Dr. Alexandre Varaschin Palaoro.

Maria Eduarda Girelli
I am a Biological Sciences undergraduate student at Universidade Federal do Paraná and have been working in the laboratory since 2023. My first scientific initiation was with Myrmeleontidae, in which we did a taxonomic update on Argentoleon irrigatus. I am currently doing scientific initiation cataloging the Coniopterygidae (Neuroptera) of the state of Paraná and I intend to work with the family during my postgraduate studies.

Msc Alice Carvalho Assmar
I am a PhD student at McGill University, Montreal. I am advised by Prof. Dr. Jessica Gillung and co-advised by Prof. Dr. Renato Machado. My research project focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind lifestyle transitions in aquatic insects. More specifically, my goal is to reconstruct the ancestral character status of Osmyloidea (Insecta: Neuroptera), investigating its origin (aquatic or terrestrial), diversification and the processes that led to the distribution of this group on Earth. I use DNA from specimens deposited in entomological collections to estimate the evolutionary history and historical biogeography of this group.

Gabriel Marangão Bueno
Biologist from the Universidade Federal do ABC and currently master's student in Evolution and Diversity at the same institution. I am a collaborator at the Laboratório de Neuroptera e Sistematica, under the co-supervision of Professor Renato Machado and supersion of professor Guilherme Ribeiro. My project aims to understand the phylogenetic relationships between the fossils of Myrmeleontidae from the Cretaceous and associated lineages, seeking to elucidate the origin and initial evolution of these families. My main research interests are aspects related to evolutionary biology, paleontology and phylogenetic systematics, with both a theoretical and practical focus.

Msc. Phillip Alves Schuster
Biologist and insect lover! At the Laboratório de Neuroptera e Sistemática, I began sorting and identifying insects of the order Neuroptera for the PROFAUPAR project. From this experience, we were able to publish a paper (Schuster & Machado, 2021). From this research, we noticed the need to review the genera of the Ululodini tribe (Ascalaphinae) and, during my master's degree (Universidade Federal do Paraná), we published a review of the genus Ascalorphne together with a phylogenetic analysis of all Ascalaphinae tribes that occur in the Neotropical region (Schuster & Machado, 2023).
